You’ve likely heard several adages that have to do with characteristics brought out by a messy environment. One is, “A cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind.” While a less-than-neat desk or office can actually help its user be more creative, you might be surprised to learn that there are actual health benefits to having a more organized personal space: Having custom closet organization can literally make you healthier. Here are a few of the reasons why.
Dust Mites No More
While most of us don’t want to think about it, every home contains dust mites. As dust settles on surfaces, mites reproduce. Places like high shelves, out-of-season clothing and other seldom-used items can harbor a lot of these microscopic mites. The good news is that for most people dust mites are just an icky thought and they won’t cause any harm.
Some, however, are allergic to these tiny pests. If you frequently suffer from a runny nose, itchy eyes, scratchy throat and even skin rashes, a dust mite allergy might be to blame.
Being sure that your personal spaces, namely your bedroom and your closet, are as dust-free as possible can bring relief. (One caveat: If you are allergic to dust mites, have someone else do the cleaning and dusting if possible; otherwise, wear a dust mask!)
Better Organization, Better Eating Habits?
It sounds crazy, but believe it or not, researchers at the University of Minnesota have discovered that having a messy environment can actually cause people to eat more unhealthfully. How can that be? During a study, people were randomly assigned to spend time in either a neat and tidy room or a disorderly, messy room. They were then asked to accept either a candy bar or an apple. They were also asked to help choose new menu items for a restaurant.
The people who were in the orderly room were more likely to choose the healthier snack as well as the healthier menu options than those who had spent their time in a messy room. Keeping your bedroom and closet organized can actually prompt you to make better decisions about what you put in your mouth, which can lead to better overall health.
Less Mess, Less Stress
Finally, better organization is likely to pay off in dividends when it comes to your stress levels. If you can find what you need when you need it and you aren’t starting your day off frantically trying to locate a pair of shoes or a certain blouse, you’re more likely to stay cool and collected. This can provide health benefits ranging from lower blood pressure to better sleep!
If you have been on the fence about whether or not a closet organization system is right for you, consider whether your health would improve if you had better overall organization. A closet organization company can help you narrow down your options as you tame your closet clutter monster, and you’ll likely find that the cost is well worth the peace of mind (and maybe less sneezing, better shut-eye and a few inches off of your waistline!).
